Bharuch, Gujarat – July 13, 2024
Residents and Mining industry stakeholders in Bharuch district are raising urgent concerns over the prolonged absence of a permanent geologist, which is severely impacting the mining sector. The mining industry, crucial to the region's economy, has been struggling due to a lack of professional expertise and guidance.
Background:
The issue dates back to May 2023, when the Industries and Mines Department, Gandhinagar, appointed Smt. Rachana Oza as Assistant Geologist Class-II in Bharuch. However, the charge of Geologist for Bharuch was given to Shri Naresh Jani, ADFS Surat, as Geologist (I/c). Meanwhile, Smt. Rachana Oza was given the additional charge of Geologist (I/c) for the Narmada district. However, the sufficiency of the knowledge and degree required to work as a geologist of Naresh Jani is in question
Recently, Shri Naresh Jani was implicated in an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) case, leading to his removal from the position. The responsibilities were subsequently transferred to Smt. Rachana Oza, who is now overseeing both Bharuch and Narmada districts. Compounding the issue, Smt. Rachana Oza is either in training or on leave, and her duties have temporarily been assigned to the Geologist of Mahisagar, who is already managing four districts.
Impact on the Region:
Bharuch is the second highest district in Gujarat for royalty generation from mining activities and holds the highest number of mining leases in the state. The lack of a permanent geologist has led to significant disruptions in mining operations, posing risks to worker safety and environmental sustainability.
Local stakeholders emphasize the necessity of having a permanent, qualified geologist to ensure the smooth functioning of the mining industry. The absence of such expertise not only hampers operations but also threatens the livelihoods of workers and increases the risk of environmental damage.
Community Response:
Local authorities and industry leaders have expressed their frustration and concern. A formal complaint was lodged, urging the immediate appointment of a permanent geologist to address the pressing needs of the region.
"The efficient functioning of the mining industry is crucial for Bharuch. The absence of a permanent geologist not only disrupts operations but endangers lives and the environment. We need a qualified expert to guide and support the industry," stated a concerned stakeholder.
Call to Action:
The community is calling on the Government of Gujarat to expedite the appointment of a permanent geologist for Bharuch. This crucial step is essential for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the mining sector, protecting the environment, and safeguarding the revenue and royalty generated for the state.
Conclusion:
The prolonged absence of a permanent geologist in Bharuch district highlights a critical gap that needs immediate attention. The appointment of a dedicated, experienced geologist is not just a necessity but a priority for the region's economic stability and environmental protection.
